A lived-in house
Since the inheritance in 1995 the castle has belonged to the Teuffel von Birkensee family, who live in it. All the buildings are lived in, including the orangery. The castle is therefore not open to the public.
Please respect the family’s privacy. This website is a private information site with no connection to the owners.
Guided tours
Visits are possible only as part of guided tours booked in advance. They lead across the castle courtyards and through the park to the orangery and into the chapel – the chapel is the only interior shown. The tours are given by the family themselves.
Please address enquiries to the family. The town of Halle (Westf.) publishes the contact details on its page about Wasserschloss Tatenhausen.
The surroundings
The castle lies on the edge of the Tatenhauser Wald. The forest is a nature reserve of 114 hectares and is used for forestry; the castle itself is not part of it. Footpaths run along the Loddenbach, Ruthebach and Laibach streams.
Tatenhausen is stop 3 on the “Laibachweg” cultural trail and lies on the BahnRadRoute Teuto-Senne and the Haller Radrundweg R2 cycle routes. The spa’s former assembly house, the Gasthof Tatenhausen, has a restaurant.
Archive and research
The Tatenhausen estate archive is held on deposit at the LWL-Archivamt für Westfalen in Münster. Its charter collection alone comprises 658 charters from the years 1353 to 1909. It is the most important source for research into the history of the castle and the family.
